What are Parts of Speech in English Grammar?
Words are divided according to the purpose they are used for. The different kinds of words are called Parts of Speech.
The parts of speech are eight in number.
NOUN (Nouns are words used for persons, places and things.
Aslam saw a bird on the branch of a tree.
Pronouns are words used in place of nouns. (l, You, He, She, They, Who etc.)
- Aslam is a good teacher.
- He says his prayers regularly.
Adjectives are words that describe or which tell us the qualities of a noun or pronoun.
- Aslam is a tall boy.
- She is a geed singer.
- He has won several prizes.
Verbs are words used for saying something about the activity of a person or a thing.
- Joe goes to college.
- He writes a letter.
- The thief ran away.
Adverbs are words used to qualify (add something to) the meaning of a verb. An adjective or other adverbs.
- He quietly asked me to leave the house.
- She spoke softly.
- James coughed loudly to attract her attention.
The “Preposition” means, “That which placed prepositions are words which are placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relation with other noun pronoun or thing.
- He sat on the chair.
- There is some milk in the fridge.
- She was hiding under the table.
A conjunction is a word that joins together words, clauses, and sentences.
- Joe and John are brothers.
- He is sad but hopeful.
An interjection is a word or phrase that is grammatically independent of the words around it, and mainly expresses feeling rather than meaning.
- Ahh, that feels wonderful.
- Alas! I’m lost in the wilderness.
- Bah! That was a total waste of time.
